Apple Vision Pro was announced on 5 June 2023 at WWDC, Apple's developer conference. US pre-orders opened on 19 January 2024, and it went on sale at every US Apple Store and online on Friday 2 February 2024. It cost $3,499 with 256 GB. At launch it was sold only in the US.

Japan got it on Friday 28 June 2024, with pre-orders from 10 a.m. Japan time on 14 June. That was the same day as China mainland, Hong Kong and Singapore, the group that came after the US. The Japanese price started at 599,800 yen including tax, in 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK followed two weeks later, on 12 July.

What Apple said it had made

Apple called Vision Pro a spatial computer that blends digital content with the physical world, and called visionOS the world's first spatial operating system. Apps leave the frame of a screen and sit in the space around the user, who controls them by looking, tapping their fingers and speaking. In the announcement, CEO Tim Cook said: "Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing." At the US launch he called it "the most advanced consumer electronics device ever created." Both are Apple's own framing.

It also introduced EyeSight, which shows the wearer's eyes through the front glass, and Personas, which recreate the wearer's face and hand movements on FaceTime calls. Apple said more than a million iPhone and iPad apps would run on it, and a Mac's screen could be shown as a large virtual display inside the headset.

How it was received

The Verge's review called its video passthrough, which shows the outside world through cameras, the best ever shipped in a consumer device by far. It also pointed to blur in low light and when moving, and found Personas uncanny. Weight was the other problem. By The Verge's measurement the headset weighed between 600 and 650 grams depending on the band and light seal, plus a separate 353-gram battery on a cable. Apple told the magazine it had moved the battery off the headset specifically to reduce the weight.

How many sold

Apple has not published unit sales for Vision Pro. What exists are reported estimates.

  • The Information (2024, as summarised by MacRumors): suppliers had already produced components for 500,000 to 600,000 headsets. Luxshare, the assembler, was making about 1,000 a day as of October, half its peak, and Apple had told it to wind production down in November
  • MacRumors (April 2026): citing insider sources, it reported a return rate far above any other modern Apple product

Neither figure has been confirmed by Apple.

The M5 model, and after

On 15 October 2025 Apple announced Vision Pro with the M5. The outside was unchanged. According to Apple, it rendered 10 percent more pixels on the custom micro-OLED displays, could run at up to 120 Hz when the wearer looks at their surroundings, and lasted up to two and a half hours of general use or three hours of video. It came with a new Dual Knit Band whose lower strap carries tungsten inserts as a counterweight. The US price stayed at $3,499, and it went on sale on 22 October in countries and regions including Japan.

As of October 2026, what has happened since is known only from reports.

WhenReport
April 2026MacRumors reported that the M5 model had failed to revive interest, and that Apple had stopped work on Vision Pro and moved the team to other groups. It also noted that Apple had not discontinued the product and was still selling the M5 model
September 2026Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple's Vision team was exploring four concepts for a revamped headset (N224), unlikely to arrive before late 2028 or early 2029 (as summarised by MacRumors)

Apple itself has announced nothing about either. When the new Siri (Siri AI, first as an English beta) began rolling out on 14 September 2026, Vision Pro was among the devices it covered.

Where it sits

Vision Pro took the M-series chips of the Mac and iPad onto a device worn on the head, and came with a new operating system driven by the eyes and hands. Against a $3,499 price and a heavy headset, the market response was muted, and Apple, without disclosing any numbers, updated only the inside with the M5. For other hardware milestones see the hardware timeline; for the beginning of the M series, Apple M1; for the company, Apple. The display technology is explained under OLED.
