Meta Quest is the line of VR headsets sold by Meta, formerly Facebook. It began as the Oculus Quest, which started shipping on 21 May 2019 at prices from $399. Pre-orders opened on 30 April, and Oculus's announcement listed retailers in the US, the UK, the EU and Japan (Amazon Japan). What set it apart from earlier Oculus flagships was that it ran on its own, with no PC and no cable. The Oculus name gave way to Meta from 2022.

Background: Facebook buys Oculus, and the Rift

Oculus was the product brand of Oculus VR, which Facebook agreed to acquire on 25 March 2014. According to Facebook's announcement, the deal was worth about $2 billion in total, made up of $400 million in cash and 23.1 million Facebook shares valued at $1.6 billion, with up to $300 million more as an earn-out. In it Mark Zuckerberg said "Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever".

The first consumer product, Oculus Rift, began reaching pre-order customers on 28 March 2016. According to Gear Patrol it cost $599 on pre-order and needed a separate, powerful PC to drive it. A headset that only worked with a capable PC attached also limited who could use it.

Oculus Quest (2019): VR without a PC

In its announcement of 30 April 2019 Oculus called Quest "Our first all-in-one VR gaming system". A standalone headset already existed in Oculus Go, which the same post described as "Our first all-in-one solution", but Quest was the first built around games. It needed no cables and no PC, and Oculus Insight, using sensors built into the headset, tracked the user's position so they could move around a room without external sensors. Rift S, the PC headset that began shipping the same day, also started at $399, so Oculus launched two paths side by side. The launch lineup was given as 50+ titles.

Quest 2: $299 and the mass market

Facebook announced Oculus Quest 2 on 16 September 2020. The announcement said "Quest 2 starts at $299 USD—$100 USD less than the original Quest"; it shipped on 13 October with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 platform and 6 GB of RAM. The same post said Facebook would no longer pursue PC-only hardware and that Rift S sales would end in 2021.

Meta has not officially published Quest unit sales. According to Road to VR, The Verge reported on 1 March 2023 that Mark Rabkin, Meta's vice president of VR, had told an internal presentation that Quest headsets had sold nearly 20 million units. That likely covers Quest, Quest 2 and Quest Pro, with Quest 2 the large majority. At the same presentation Rabkin reportedly said later buyers were less engaged than early ones, adding "We need to be better at growth and retention and resurrection."

From Oculus to Meta Quest

Facebook renamed itself Meta on 28 October 2021. According to UploadVR, incoming CTO Andrew Bosworth said the same day that the Oculus brand would be retired and that Oculus Quest 2 would become Meta Quest 2 from early 2022, because Meta wanted to make it clear that Quest is a Meta product. He also said work was under way on options for using Quest without the Facebook account that had been made mandatory the year before.

Later models have carried the Meta name. At Meta Connect on 11 October 2022 the company announced the high-end Meta Quest Pro, at $1,499.99, shipping on 25 October. Meta Quest 3, announced on 27 September 2023, reached shelves on 10 October; Meta called it the world's first mass-market mixed reality headset, a headset built around showing the room in full colour and placing virtual objects in it. On 25 September 2024 Meta announced Meta Quest 3S, from $299.99, pitched as delivering Quest 3's mixed reality for less.

Reality Labs' losses

The division that makes Quest is Reality Labs. Since the fourth quarter of 2021 Meta has reported it separately from its family of apps such as Facebook and Instagram. According to Meta's results, the segment covers consumer hardware, software and content related to VR and AR, so it includes smart glasses as well as Quest.

YearReality Labs revenueReality Labs operating loss
2023$1.896 billion$16.120 billion
2024$2.146 billion$17.729 billion
2025$2.207 billion$19.193 billion
January–June 2026$833 million$8.647 billion

The losses have grown every year. In its January 2026 results Meta said it expected Reality Labs' 2026 operating losses to remain similar to 2025 levels.

The same month brought reports of cuts. On 13 January 2026 Road to VR reported that Meta was closing three VR game studios it had bought, Armature Studio (Resident Evil 4 VR), Twisted Pixel and Sanzaru Games (Asgard's Wrath), and noted reports that 10% of the Reality Labs workforce was being laid off. The article placed this against reports that Meta was shifting focus from immersive VR devices toward AI glasses such as its Ray-Ban and Oakley models.

As of October 2026

The headline reveal at Meta Connect in September 2026 was not a headset but Meta VR Glasses. According to a commentary by the research firm IDC, they weigh about 100 grams, move the computing into a puck carried in a pocket, and are due in spring 2027 at $1,299. In the same piece IDC said shipments of passthrough VR devices, the category that includes Quest and Apple Vision Pro, peaked in 2024 and fell 44% in 2025, and that Quest headsets have taken the majority of the category's unit sales every year since 2024.

What the 2019 Quest showed was that cutting VR loose from the PC and lowering the price brings in more users, and the line up to Quest 3S has built on that. Yet buyers who stop using their headsets and a division losing close to $20 billion a year remain, and Meta is moving its weight toward glasses.
