Linus Torvalds
Author of the Linux kernel (1991), which he still maintains. Studied computer science at the University of Helsinki, then moved to the United States. Also the author of Git (2005), the program that popularised distributed version control. Has not received the ACM Turing Award, but holds the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award (2014) among many others.

- August 25, 1991Linux — Linus Torvalds' 21-Year-Old AnnouncementLinus Torvalds, then a student at the University of Helsinki, posted to comp.os.minix: "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)." The first sources ran to about 10,000 lines, indebted to Minix but written as an independent kernel. Released under the GPL in 1992, it grew through contributions from developers worldwide; by 2026, Linux is the kernel at the core of most of the world's servers, smartphones, and supercomputers.
