Guido van Rossum

Guido van Rossum (b. 31 January 1956) is the creator of the Python programming language. What he began over the Christmas holiday of 1989 as a private pastime at CWI (Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica) in Amsterdam has, in thirty-odd years, become one of the most widely used general-purpose languages in the world. Within the Python community he long styled himself the "Benevolent Dictator For Life" — BDFL — until he stepped down from that role in 2018.

Background

Van Rossum was born on 31 January 1956 in The Hague. His father was an architect; his younger brother, Just van Rossum, is a well-known type designer (the typeface "Beowolf"). After an indifferent schoolboy career in mathematics he read mathematics and computer science at the University of Amsterdam, taking his master's degree in 1982.

He joined the ABC team at CWI — ABC was an interactive, dynamically typed language designed for teaching. Working under Lambert Meertens and Steven Pemberton, van Rossum came to believe that ABC had the right basic instincts (indentation as syntax, high-level data types, an emphasis on readability) but was fatally closed off: it could not call C, it could not be extended, it could not see the system underneath it. From this came the design brief that became Python.

Over the Christmas holiday of 1989, with CWI essentially deserted, he started writing the new language as a system-administration tool for the Amoeba distributed operating system. He named it after Monty Python's Flying Circus, which the BBC was rebroadcasting at the time. Python 0.9.0 was posted to alt.sources in February 1991.

Major Contributions

Python (1991-)

Python's design choices have been debated for longer than most languages have existed. The use of indentation rather than braces produced complaint at first but is now usually treated as the discipline that enforces readability. Dynamic typing, "first-class everything" (functions, classes and modules are all objects), and the "batteries-included" standard library combined to blur the line between scripting language and general-purpose language.

In 1995 van Rossum moved to the United States to continue Python work at CNRI (Corporation for National Research Initiatives). The Python 2.0 release in 2000 — and the licence questions surrounding it — led directly to the founding of the Python Software Foundation in 2001.

Python 3.0 shipped in 2008. It deliberately broke backwards compatibility — strings became Unicode by default, print became a function, integer division changed behaviour. The transition from Python 2 generated extraordinary friction in the community and took more than a decade; Python 2.7 was finally end-of-lifed on 1 January 2020.

In the present decade the language's dominance in machine learning and data science (NumPy, pandas, PyTorch, TensorFlow) has made it the de facto "language of data" of the early twenty-first century. Python has topped the TIOBE index and the GitHub annual rankings since 2021, and as of 2025 trades with JavaScript at or near the top of the Stack Overflow developer survey for most-used languages.

Career

  • 2013-2019 — Dropbox, where Python was the core of the infrastructure.
  • 2019 — Retired from Dropbox; first attempt at retirement.
  • November 2020 — Joined Microsoft as a Distinguished Engineer.

"I just like the idea of retiring. So I try to see how many times in a lifetime I can retire," he remarked in a 2021 interview. The retirement did not stick.

Stepping Down as BDFL (2018)

On 12 July 2018, van Rossum posted a brief note titled "Transfer of Power" to the python-committers list, announcing that he was vacating the role of "Benevolent Dictator For Life." The immediate trigger was the bitter debate over PEP 572, which proposed the so-called walrus operator (:=). PEP 572 itself was accepted, but in the post van Rossum wrote that the personal attacks he had absorbed during the process — on the public list, on Twitter, and in private — had drained him.

The line most often quoted is the wryly self-deprecating "I would like to step down" combined with "I am tired of fighting." He observed that, since he had never been elected, no election was required to leave either. The BDFL position itself was retired; subsequent governance moved to a five-member Steering Council.

He has not received the ACM Turing Award.

Current Activities

Since joining Microsoft in November 2020, van Rossum has led the formation of the Faster CPython team — an effort, founded on Mark Shannon's proposal to make Python five times faster in four years (the "Shannon Plan"), that delivered steady performance gains through CPython 3.11 (2022), 3.12 (2023), 3.13 (2024) and 3.14 (2025). The most ambitious threads have been the experimental Tier-2 JIT and the gradual removal of the Global Interpreter Lock (PEP 703 "free-threading," experimentally available since 3.13).

In May 2025, however, as part of Microsoft's broad redundancy round, most members of the Faster CPython team were let go. Van Rossum himself is reported still to be at Microsoft, but Mark Shannon and several other principals moved on, some to Meta. Continued performance work on the Python core is expected to proceed under a more distributed arrangement led by the Python Software Foundation.

Van Rossum keeps a deliberately small public presence: PyCon US each year, a few European language conferences, and Mastodon (on fosstodon.org). He has stated publicly that he left X (Twitter) in 2022.

Legacy

What van Rossum embodied was a clear departure from the conventional language aesthetics of his day — the dense expressivity of Perl, the structural austerity of C++, the symbolic elegance of the Lisps — in favour of an almost moral insistence on readability. The aphorism "explicit is better than implicit," from Tim Peters's Zen of Python, is in effect a retrospective verbalisation of his design choices.

Python is the working language of practically every part of the 2020s AI surge — machine learning, large-language-model training, data analysis. PyTorch, NumPy, pandas, Hugging Face's transformers library and even much of the serving code behind ChatGPT are Python. Van Rossum has repeatedly said he never intended to design a language for AI; the language was simply well suited to data manipulation and glue work, and that "simply well suited" property has, almost incidentally, reorganised the computer culture of the early twenty-first century around Python.

The BDFL title — and its voluntary surrender — also marks an important moment in the cultural history of open source. The contrast with Linus Torvalds, who is still the final merger of the Linux kernel after thirty-five years, is sharp: van Rossum performed an alternative ethic, that there is a point at which a single individual should hand a project over to an institution rather than carry it alone.
